People lined up all around the globe for the iPhone 6. However, the lines were mostly made up of Chinese, according to local reports.

Though Apple launched the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus on Sept. 9 in the U.S., a date has still not been set for the release of the iPhone in mainland China, where there is a huge demand for the gadget. Therefore, many Chinese smuggle the cellphones from the U.S. and other Asian countries to sell it for double or triple the original prices in China.

Carrier Frustrations

Even before the launch of the iPhone 6 in Taiwan, some cellphone carriers traded complaints over the timing of the iPhone 6's release yesterday.

Four major Taiwanese carriers scheduled the iPhone 6 launch at different times. However, after Taiwan Mobile (台灣大哥大) postponed its launch ceremony, it then clashed with Far EasTone's (遠傳) ceremony. Far EasTone was upset by this adjustment and worried about competing with Taiwan Mobile for media coverage.

These Taiwanese carriers settled their iPhone 6 release times as follows: T Star (台灣之星) at 12:00 a.m., Taiwan Mobile at 8:30 a.m., Far EasTone at 9 a.m. and Chunghwa Telecom (中華電信) at 9:30 a.m. today.

The three main Taiwanese cellphone carriers, namely Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile and Far EasTone, debated over releasing the iPhone 6 at midnight along with T Star. However, they decided to launch the new iPhone this morning after negotiation.

Due to a location-related issues, Taiwan Mobile could not hold the launch event at the secluded time but had to postpone it to 30 minutes later, clashing with Far EasTone, which was also releasing the iPhone 6 at 9 a.m.

Far EasTone disapproved of the change and announced to local media yesterday that “Reporters cannot retake photos of the launch event. Please come to our event to take photos before going to Taiwan Mobile's ceremony.”

However, Taiwan Mobile and T Star were equally dissatisfied by Far EasTone's demonstration of the new iPhone ahead of time. Far EasTone unveiled and demonstrated the iPhone 6 at its Xinyi Vieshow branch yesterday morning. The other cellphone carriers expressed their shock, asking “How could Far EasTone do so?” according to local reports. The carriers speculated that Far EasTone wanted to get more media coverage after T Star's stocking of the iPhone on Wednesday gained exposure in local reports.
