TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Chinese Taipei was defeated by South Korea 6 -3 yesterday at the Incheon Asian Games baseball final, settling with silver in the contest.
The game yesterday began with a rocky start for Chinese Taipei, who managed to defuse a perilous situation with all the bases loaded at the top of the first inning. At the bottom of the first, Lin Han (林瀚), Chinese Taipei's second batter established a 1-0 lead by scoring one point via a ground ball toward second base after a triple by Chen Pin-chie (陳品捷). Fans also disputed the umpire's decision to rule a perceivably successful third base steal an out.
The contest continued with unfruitful onslaughts by both teams until the top of the fifth inning, when South Korea let loose with a line drive between first and second base to score one run. In response, Chinese Taipei subbed in pitcher Chen Kuan-yu (陳冠宇). The score dipped to 2-1 against Chinese Taipei when South Korea's third batter produced a ground ball that sent two of his compatriots running back to home plate from first and third. Although Chinese Taipei defenders stopped the runner from first base, they missed the second runner. An error by shortstop Pan Chih-fang (潘志芳) allowed a runner to reach first.
Chinese Taipei returned fire at the bottom of the sixth inning, when second batsman Lin Han again unleashed a forceful line drive toward center field with runners on first and third following a time out called by South Korea. Chinese Taipei gained more momentum as third batsman Kuo Yen-wen (郭嚴文) hit a sacrifice RBI, bringing the score to a 3-2 lead against South Korea. Local sports fans fumed when fourth batsman Chen Chun-hsiou (陳俊秀) was struck out, questioning the umpire's pitching assessment.
The tide of the battle, however, turned in favor of South Korea at the top of the eighth, as the team overwhelmed Chinese Taipei with three runs beginning with relief pitcher Lo Jia-ren (羅嘉仁)'s beaning of South Korea's fifth batsman with the bases loaded, bringing the score to 3-3. South Korea laid down two more runs when the sixth batsman struck a ground ball toward first base with runners on second and third, and when the seventh batter produced a base hit toward right field with a runner on first, pushing the score to a 6-3 lead for South Korea. Three quick outs in the ninth ended the championship hopes of Chinese Taipei.
Meanwhile, despite the loss of the gold medal at the Asian Games, local sports fans commended the performance young Chinese Taipei pitchers Chen Kuan-yu (陳冠宇) and Kuo Chun-lin (郭俊麟). Fans noted that prospects for Chen's entrance to professional leagues abroad have been improved by his stellar performance at Incheon after recuperating from a previous injury, while the value of Kuo, who currently plays in the Japanese professional league, is anticipated to see a similar rise.
