Most of the products that contain the tainted coconut oil have already been processed into ice cream and coffee creamer. Since these products have relatively early expiration dates, they may already have been consumed by customers.

Following the oil scandal and recent food safety crises, some experts have suggested that the government should manage drugs and food separately and put in place independent organizations to take on the different tasks.

MHW Minister Chiang Been-huang (蔣丙煌) said this is not likely as his ministry has recently made changes to the way it operates. He said it is possible for the FDA to try to divide its work into two different sections and for those sections to work separately without interfering in the other's bailiwick.

Chiang also stated that although manpower is mainly focused on inspecting and tracking food manufacturers involved in the oil scandal, the MHW can guarantee that there are still officials keeping an eye on drug management.

Chiang acknowledged that the recent crisis has shown there is a shortage of manpower in his ministry. He admitted that it is an issue resulting from the way the ministry is set up and he will reflect on this problem in a bid to solve it.

Ting Hsin draws a line between itself and Wei Chuan

Ting Hsin International Group (頂新集團) Chairman, Wei Ying-chou (魏應州), made a statement on Sunday, saying that Ting Hsin has stopped allowing Taiwan Wei-Chuan Food Co. (味全) to produce products under the brand name Master Kong (康師傅) and taken back two production lines located in Taiwan.

Some food manufacturers consider the Ting Hsin statement a way to vouchsafe the mainland market as their operations there have fallen under some scrutiny since the oil scandal broke in Taiwan.

Responding to these suspicions, the company said that Wei Chuan's bad management has damaged the brand name to such an extent that this decision had to be made.
