聖歌《平安夜》的頭兩行是： 
Silent night！Holy night！ 
All is calm，all is bright． 
（平安夜，聖善夜，萬暗中，光華射。） 
從中可學到all作主語時，除指人外，均作單數。 
第一次世界大戰時，一首英軍歌曲以這樣兩句開始： 
It's a long way to Tipperary． 
It's a long way to go．

句中沒有用far，因為far主要用於問句和否定句。如：How far is it to the station？；It isn't far to my home．在肯定句中常用a long way表示“遠”，如：It's a long way to the church．；還可以說It is a long way from North America． 
美國影片《翠堤春曉》插曲《當我們還年輕》中有這樣的歌詞： 
You told me you loved me and held me close to your heart．Remember we loved then．Then came the time to part． 
句中close to為一片語，意為“靠近”；兩個then分別表示“當時”和“後來”兩種不同的意思。最後是一倒裝句，並有不定式作定語。 
美國影片《音樂之聲》插曲《雪絨花》的第一句是：Edelweiss，edelweiss，every morning you greet me．這裡要注意的是edelweiss的發音為／`eidlvais ／。在這個單詞中，字母w發／v／音，這個詞是源於德語的外來語詞。此外，像of中的f也發／v／音。 
再來看看謎語。英文謎語和謎底常採取問答形式： 
What do Americans do with their meat？ 
They eat what they can and can what they cannot． 
這裡主要學習問句中的短語do with（處理），以及答句中的第二個can，它是及物動詞，意為：“把……製成罐頭”。 
Why is letter b like fire？ 
Because it makes oil boil． 
從答句中可看出oil與boil有相似形象，也複習了make的賓語之後須接一“不帶to的不定式”（bare infinitive）。
