Quetta, Pakistan (CNN) -- At least five people were killed in a powerful suicide bomb explosion Saturday night near a girls' high school in Quetta, police said.

Quetta Police Officer Abdul Razaq Cheema said a suicide bomber "blew himself up near (a) girls' high school" in the Hazarat Town section of the city, the capital of the volatile Balochistan province in southwestern Pakistan.

"Several people are injured as result of blast," said another officer, Imran Qureshi.

The injured were rushed to two hospitals. The number of injured was not immediately available.

Jan Muhammad Buledi, a spokesman for the provincial government, told CNN that a state of emergency was imposed in all government-run hospitals soon after the blast.

Dr. Malik Baloch, chief minister of the province, strongly condemned the attack, calling it a conspiracy against the people of Balochistan.

"We would not bow down before terrorists," Baloch said in a statement issued to the media, adding that authorities "will bring the perpetrators to book."
