TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Former Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Principal Deputy Minister Chang Hsieh-yao (張顯耀) said yesterday that he had in fact been “forced” to step down, just one day after the Executive Yuan announced his resignation due to “family reasons.”

Issuing a public statement late last night, Chang announced out of the blue that he had been notified by his “superiors” to step down from his position as deputy minister last Thursday. “I have been loyal to my job and fulfilling my duties during my time in position; as an official appointed by the President, I have done my best when my country needed me ... when my superiors do not need me, I accept it with grace.”

The sudden statement was seen by many as a slap in the face for the Cabinet and the MAC, as Chang announced that he was in fact forced from his position.

Chang's sudden resignation sparked public surprise and guesses as he doubles as the vice chairman and secretary-general of the Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF). He was generally regarded as a government favorite.

An unnamed legislator who is allegedly close to Chang stated that the latter was forced to quit as he did not get along with MAC Minister Wang Yu-chi (王郁琦), other sources, however, pointed out that Chang was prodded from his position due to his indiscreet speech during the recent visit of Taiwan Affairs Office Minister Zhang Zhijun (張志軍).

台北，台灣 - 前行政院大陸委員會（MAC），首席副部長張謝耀（張顯耀）昨天表示，他實際上已經被“逼”下台，僅僅一天後，行政院宣布辭職，原因是“家庭原因。“

發出公開聲明，昨天深夜，張宣布了他已經被他的“上級”通知從他的位置作為副部長上週四下台的藍色。“我一直忠於我的工作，在我的立場，履行我的職責; 作為正式由總統任命，我已經做了我最好的時候，我的祖國需要我......當我的上司並不需要我，我接受了恩典“。

突如其來的聲明是被許多人看作在臉上內閣和MAC一巴掌，因為昌宣布，他實際上是從他的位置被迫的。

小張的突然辭職引發了公眾的驚喜和猜測，因為他兼作副理事長兼秘書長，海峽交流基金會（海基會）的。他通常被認為是政府的最愛。
