President Ma Ying-jeou yesterday held a press conference on the recent Taipei Metro tragedy at the Presidential Office, urging the media and social network users to refrain from spreading photographs and clips of the brutal attack.

The president pointed out that the incident was an act of violence, not heroism, urging the media and the public to not encourage copycats by glamorizing the incident. The president asked people to display more concern for those around them, adding that perhaps through warmth, similar tragedies will be prevented.

The president also said that he has instructed the relevant authorities to increase police on public transportation, adding that a comprehensive review will be conducted.

On Wednesday, a 21-year-old knife-wielding assailant attacked passengers abroad a Taipei Metro train, leaving four dead and more than 20 wounded. The assailant's parents yesterday released a public apology, saying that the most severe punishment would not make up for what their son did and that if it were possible, they would bear the suffering of the victims and their family members.

KMT Blasts Lin For Linking Cross-Pact Pact, Metro Tragedy

The Kuomintang (KMT) yesterday criticized Taiwan March leader Lin Fei-fan (林飛帆) for drawing a connection between the metro tragedy and the Cross-Strait Trade in Services Agreement, saying that Lin's remarks were exemplary of the worst kind of political maneuvering.

Lin posted a message on his Facebook page and said, “What kind of person, when the people are focused on the Taipei Metro incident, when (people) are suffering, would plan on taking the opportunity to push the service trade pact through (the Legislature). This not only shows that the Ma administration is using this incident to manipulate public fear and people's sadness, (but is also shows that) it is aiming to suppress (social) movements.”

In response, KMT spokesman Charles Chen (陳以信) released a press statement, saying that the cross-caucus negotiations convened by Legislative Yuan Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平) had nothing to do with the Taipei Metro tragedy.

Furthermore, the suggestions made by the KMT caucus during the negotiations had nothing to do with the metro incident, Chen said.

Lin connected the two to accuse the KMT of having bad intentions, but actually his remarks are indicative of the worst kind of political maneuvering by using the metro incident as a tool forw accusation, Chen said.
