Awards were presented today in the Fabulous Taiwan photography contest, open only to foreign students receiving either the Taiwan Scholarship or the Huayu Enrichment Scholarship. Today a bureaucrat and lawmakers sought to explain comments on the MRT slayings that were perceived as being insensitive. The finance minister who wondered why nobody on the train attempted to take down the killer took back his comment, while two lawmakers who said people should be more alert said they simply wanted to look out for people’s welfare. 

Former classmate says metro killing suspect said he was going to “kill people” (2014/05/23)

New information is coming to light about Wednesday’s deadly MRT stabbings. A middle school classmate has revealed that the suspect Cheng Chieh revealed he was going to kill people that day. Cheng had also received counseling after the university he attended received a warning of erratic behavior.

Tainan’s Baihe Lotus Festival opened today. Increased demand for lotus root starch, inspired by the outbreak of tainted starch last year, meant an additional 100 hectares were planted.

Health Minister Chiu Wen-ta spoke at the 67th World Health Assembly, underway in Geneva, Switzerland. He urged for Chinese Taipei to be given a greater role in global health bodies and said cooperation with China will be increased.

During the MRT attacker’s rampage a passenger bought extra time by defending himself with an umbrella. An expert in martial arts says that umbrellas and even belts can be an effective foil for knife-wielding attackers. 

Brave citizens subdue subway killer and prevent more injuries (2014/05/22)

As Cheng Chieh attempted to leave the MRT station, he was subdued by a crowd. Leading the charge was a 62-year-old hero with training in self-defense techniques. 

Taipei mayor promises to increase MRT police force (2014/05/22)

While there was a visible police presence on the MRT today, typically it’s rare to see an officer during a trip on the metro. Today Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin promised to increase the MRT police force to better protect passengers. 

Court says metro killer suspect clear of mind (2014/05/22)

The 21-year-old college student accused of killing four during a stabbing rampage on the Taipei MRT is in custody at Taipei Detention Center. Cheng Chieh has admitted to the crime and, according to the court that questioned him, is clear of mind. 

Ma urges reduction of copycat killer risks

President Ma Ying-jeou yesterday held a press conference on the recent Taipei Metro tragedy at the Presidential Office, urging the media and social network users to refrain from spreading photographs and clips of the brutal attack.
